Aggregated supervisory banking statistics contain information on the following aspects of banks designated as significant institutions (SI) as well as less significant institutions (LSI):
- All data (for outstanding amounts) are reported in euro.
- The 7th dimension of SUP time series, "Data item 1 supervisory banking statistics" has been updated. The value "_Z" ("not applicable") has been replaced with value "SII" ("Significant institutions") and is no longer maintained as of Q1 2023. The value “LSI” has been added.
Supervised banks designated as significant institutions (SIs) directly supervised by the European Central Bank (ECB), as well as less significant institutions (LSIs) supervised by the national competent authorities (NCAs) under the oversight of the ECB.
The sample of supervised institutions considered for each reporting period comprises banks that are reporting ITS (Implementing Technical Standards) data and excludes branches at that point in time. For each bank in the sample, data are considered at the highest level of consolidation within the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). Changes in the sample can occur between reference periods due to mergers and acquisitions or reclassifications.
The sample of banks considered for the statistics on the liquidity coverage ratio and its components is a subset of the sample used for the rest of the indicators, as the scope of reporting for liquidity differs from that for own funds, and specific waivers may apply.
EU countries participating in the Single Supervisory Mechanism.
For significant institutions, data are available from the second quarter of 2015 onwards. While data on liquidity coverage ratio start from the third quarter of 2016.
For less significant institutions, data are available from the second quarter of 2020.
The statistics are based on the European Banking Authority’s harmonised reporting frameworks FINREP (financial reporting) and COREP (common reporting).
Quarterly, except for certain general government exposures which are collected only semi-annually.
The supervisory banking dataset is updated on a quarterly basis. With each update of the database figures for the previous four quarters can also be revised, as banks may resubmit data.
For information about the naming convention (series key dimensions and metadata), refer to the SUP underlying DSD (ECB_SUP1) maintained by the ECB.
