The non-energy commodity price index includes raw materials that are traded internationally. The selection of raw materials was made on the basis of the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) definition of “non-manufactured goods” as “unprocessed goods or goods at low stage of processing”. The items are listed in sections 0,1,2,4 as well as 68 of the SITC.
For details on the change in naming conventions, you can find a one-to-one correspondence between the new and old naming conventions in the STS mapping file.
Euro Area
Depending on series keys, data start being collected from 1978 or 1996.
Collection of US-Dollar-denominated data from “World Bank”, “Hamburgisches WeltWirtschaftsInstitut” (HWWI), and the United Nation’s “Food and Agriculture Organization” (FAO). Since the FAO series keys were discontinued, the series were extended forward from FAO with HWWI correspondents to build a continuous and cohesive set of series keys. Additionally, some indicators were extended backward in time by applying growth rates derived from corresponding series keys provided by FM (Financial markets data) and BISM (BIS Macro-economic series).
January 1996
Depending on series keys, data start being collected from 1978 or 1996.
2010=100
Using three alternative weights (1999-2001, 2004-2006, 2009-2011), three aggregate (interim) price indices are compiled.
The overall import-weighted index is calculated using a Laspeyres formula with index linking factors referring to December 2002 and December 2007. Compilation based on 2 final indices, the first one using the first 2 sets of weights (1999-2001 & 2004-2006) and the linking factors in December 2002 and the second one using the 3 sets of weights and the linking factors in December 2002 and December 2007.

Index
The input data are converted into euros, and the series keys are recalculated using the two weighting methods: UWI (use-weighted) and ECP (import-weighted). If data for the latest month are unavailable, the values from the previous month are carried forward. Finally, all data are rebased to a 2010 index with a base value of 100.
